Icleand - Nordurland Vestra - (North West Iceland)

On leaving Isafjordur in the west fjords we follow the coast east to Hvammstangi.  It was to be a long trip, a bit like following the laps of corrugated card.

First stop on leaving town was to drop post cards in the letter box, no-one about as it was before 9am and quite dark.
Next to pick up our laundry as we had made him promise to have it done by the time he opened at 9am.  It opened a few minutes early and it was all neatly folded on the counter.
Looking back across the fjord to Isafjordur from above the airport - a sealed airstrip.
Several fjords and 2 1/2 hours later we came across this castle where some attempt was being made at restoration.  It was not a particularly historic building.
This view down to the jetty part of which had collapsed.
Like much of the coast it was a rocky shore line to build a jetty.

It was not long until the plateau between Reykjanes and Holmvik where traveling east the waterfalls among the ice were easily seen.
A break, after 4 hours traveling, at Holmvik for coffee and a bite to eat at a cafe in the grocery store.  The road sign is the standard signage upon entering a town/village and when leaving has a diagonal red line across it.
The landscape changes quickly as we pass along our last fjords but always picturesque.

 A tidy farming area...

 ... then poor grazing land...

 ...then back to improved farmland.
Then to land that appeared to have reverted to poor grazing.
Everywhere water flowing toward the sea, or just sitting, not going anywhere.
Then some more improved pasture.
Elapsed time since leaving Holmvik and this photograph, 20 minutes.

Next stop is Hvammstangi for two nights. It takes us closest to the arctic circle and a glimpse of icebergs, whales and Grimsey Island in the next blog.
